What I’m Giving Up For Lent and Why

cookies It is with great trepidation that I write the next words. I will give up cookies for Lent. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but over the last several weeks, I have become overly fond of cookies. Don’t get me wrong, I have always liked cookies2cookies. My first memories of cookies are the devils-food cookies (take note of that name) that my dad used to pick up at the grocery store. They had kind of a hard coating with the cake inside and a line of white icing next to the hard shell. After that my cookie of choice was the fudge-striped cookies by Keebler. In my teens, I discovered the delightful pleasure of home-made chocolate chip cookies. It is not like I have eaten cookies every day of my life for these many years, but I have enjoyed more than a few.

Since I discovered the gourmet cookies from Bi-Lo this winter, it’s pretty much been an every day thing. I have kept well stocked with Pepperidge Farm milk chocolate milano cookies and recently began buying M&M cookies made fresh at Bi-Lo daily.  So no more cookies for me. The half container in the kitchen right now will go in the freezer or be eaten by Jay. What happens on April 19 when Lent is officially over on Holy Saturday, is left to be seen, but for these days, by the grace of God, I will be cookie-less.

40-bagsIn addition to the cookie moratoriam, I am  wholeheartedly embracing a wonderful idea I read about in a blog yesterday: giving up “40 Bags for 40 Days” In the spirit of merging spring-cleaning with Lent, I will be going through cabinets, drawers, corners, bookshelves, closets on an organizing rampage. No area is safe. I will  be”giving up” something from each area, either to the trash, goodwill or someone who needs it. This is in consensus with the Decluttering Challenge issued by Ann Marie on her blog White House, Black Shutters. I’m excited about it. If you need something, ask me in the comments and if i have it, and can bring myself to part with it, it’s yours. I’ll bag it and send it. Today’s the 7th of March and I’m only two days behind. I can catch up easily.

Oh and there’s one more important part to Lent for me. I’m giving up blogs, well not really. I’m spring cleaning here too. I’m moving, for one thing to a self-hosted site, so you’ll soon be redirected there, and it may take me a little while to get acclimated to the new space, but I’ll be around. Meanwhile, I’m giong through eighty-four drafts and getting rid of one a day either by publishing or trashing it, so expect a few more fun and inspirational posts to read between now and April 19th. If you’re not getting one a day, you’ll know the trash got something and rejoice, you didn’t have to read it.

As you can see, I’m excited. Life is good! God is good! He gave us so much, and we are so blessed. The least I can do is give back what I can, and take care of what I have, living every day to bring joy to Him and to as many others as I can.

What are you giving up for Lent? Please share your thoughts, and “Remember, you are dust, and to dust you shall return, repent and believe in the gospel. This is the beginning of Lent.”

  1. Sharon,
Congrats on the self hosted site. Can’t wait to see it! If I could ask for one thing from you it would be your continued friendship, and you don’t even have to put it in a bag. 😉

    1. I love your comment, and continued friendship is yours in a box with a bow. I got to go over and catch up on your posts. For some reason, I’m not getting emails when you have a new one, so I will try to make that adjustment. You have been through a lot lately, and I am praying you will see sunshine and blue skies beginning right now.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Dale. You’re right. It is amazing how much better it makes you feel to get rid of stuff. I’m sure there’s de-cluttering that could be done in my life as well, such as throwing out all doubt, negativity, criticism, etc. Something I need to think about. I wonder how many bags I could actually come up with.

  2. SHARON! I LOVE your de-cluttering ideas with
The 40 bags in 40 days! So far by being inspired
By your blog, I have filled the SUV and the crazy
thing is, the closet almost looks the same!
I think it will be fun for us to purge together!
    THANKYOU for your inspiring ideas!!!
